Essential Tableware and Barbecue Party Supplies

Barbecue party supplies are everything you need to host a great backyard cookout — from themed tableware and decorations to grilling tools and lawn games. Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need:

Category Key Items
Tableware Paper plates, plastic cups, napkins, cutlery
Decorations Banners, balloons, tablecloths, centerpieces
Grilling Tongs, thermometer, basting brush, cedar planks
Food & Drinks Burgers, sides, soda, ice, condiments
Activities Cornhole, giant Jenga, sack races, music

Summer in the Lowcountry is made for backyard gatherings. Whether you’re feeding eight people or eighty, a little planning goes a long way. Sending invites 4-6 weeks out, stocking the right supplies, and setting up a festive space can turn a simple cookout into a party people talk about all season.

The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace has guided countless Charleston-area homeowners in sourcing the right barbecue party supplies — from grilling essentials to outdoor décor — and we’ve pulled together everything we know into this guide to help you host with confidence.

Barbecue party supplies terms simplified:

When we think of a quintessential Lowcountry cookout, we often picture long tables laden with pulled pork, brisket, and plenty of sides. But before the first rack of ribs hits the table, you need a solid foundation of tableware. Choosing the right barbecue party supplies for your table isn’t just about looks; it’s about making sure your guests can enjoy their meal without their plate collapsing under the weight of a generous helping of potato salad.

Using colorful, themed Backyard BBQ Party Supplies instantly brightens the atmosphere. For a cohesive look, many hosts opt for deluxe party packs that bundle plates, cups, and napkins into one convenient set. This ensures your red gingham matches your ruby red cups perfectly, creating a professional “put-together” vibe with minimal effort.

Durable Plates and Cutlery

The golden rule for outdoor dining is durability. We recommend high-quality paper plates or heavy-duty plastic dinnerware that can handle heat and moisture. A standard 22cm (roughly 9-inch) plate is the industry standard for main courses. When it comes to napkins, don’t settle for the thin, single-ply variety. BBQ is inherently messy! Look for 2-ply luncheon napkins that can stand up to sauce-covered fingers. These backyard bbq essentials are the unsung heroes of a successful event.

For large gatherings, bulk packs are your best friend. You can often find cutlery sets designed for 70 or more guests, which offer much better value than buying individual small packs. We suggest planning for 1-2 plates per person—one for the main meal and another for desserts or second helpings.

Themed Tablecloths and Napkins

Nothing says “barbecue” quite like the classic red and white checkered pattern. Gingham is a staple for a reason; it hides small spills and instantly signals a casual, fun environment. If you are hosting a large group on James Island, high-opacity plastic table rolls are a lifesaver. A single 100-foot roll can cover up to 12 standard rectangular tables, and the material is thick enough to hide any scratches or imperfections on rented or older folding tables.

For a more premium feel, consider flannel-backed vinyl tablecloths. These are heavier, meaning they won’t blow away in a light Folly Beach breeze, and they provide excellent spill protection for wooden patio furniture. Plus, they are wipe-clean, allowing you to reuse them for your next neighborhood block party.

Creating the Perfect Backyard Atmosphere

Transforming your backyard into a “barbecue paradise” requires more than just a hot grill. It’s about creating an environment where guests feel invited to linger long after the food is gone. The right barbecue party supplies for décor should reflect the heat and energy of summer.

We love using a mix of traditional and DIY elements. For example, a Fire Up the Grill Centerpiece Kit can be assembled in minutes. These kits often include fold-and-flare centerpieces and themed confetti that you can scatter across the buffet table to add a professional touch to your tablescape.

Choosing the Right Barbecue Party Supplies for Decor

When selecting decorations, think about the theme. Are you going for a “Country Charm” look with burlap and mason jars, or a “Tropicana” vibe with bright colors and fruit shapes?

  • Banners: Personalized banners or large pennant strings (some reaching nearly 100 feet) can define the party area and guide guests toward the food.
  • Balloons: Opt for biodegradable latex balloons in “flame red” or “sunshine yellow” to stay eco-friendly while maintaining a vibrant look.
  • Centerpieces: Cardstock shapes like grills, hot dogs, and ketchup bottles mounted on wooden sticks make great cupcake toppers or accents for floral arrangements.

Lighting and Seating for Evening Comfort

As the sun sets over the Lowcountry, lighting becomes essential. String lights, lanterns, and fire pits create a warm, inviting glow. We recommend creating “seating pockets”—small groups of chairs or benches away from the heat and smoke of the grill—where guests can talk comfortably.

To enhance the natural beauty of your yard, consider incorporating UV-protected greenery. Artificial outdoor-safe flowers and foliage are treated to withstand the South Carolina sun without fading, allowing you to add a lush look to your patio even in the peak of July heat. Adding soft furnishings like outdoor cushions and throws can also make hard patio furniture feel much more “cozy” for your guests.

Grilling Essentials and Food Serving Stations

The heart of any BBQ is the food, and the heart of the food is the grill. Whether you prefer the deep flavor of a charcoal smoker grill or the convenience of gas, having the right tools is paramount.

Beyond the grill itself, the way you serve the food matters. We suggest using galvanized metal buckets for ice and drinks and sturdy aluminum trays for transporting meat from the grill to the serving station. If you’re looking for that authentic smoky taste, don’t forget to stock up on bbq wood chips or wood chips for smokers to infuse your meats with rich, woody aromas.

Must-Have Tools for the Grillmaster

A true grillmaster is only as good as their equipment. Here are the essentials we recommend every host has on hand:

  1. Digital Thermometer: This is the only way to ensure your chicken is safe and your steaks are a perfect medium-rare.
  2. Stainless Steel Tongs and Spatulas: Look for long-handled versions to keep your hands away from the heat.
  3. Silicone Basting Brushes: These are heat-resistant and much easier to clean than traditional bristle brushes.
  4. Cedar Planks: Perfect for grilling salmon or vegetables, adding a subtle, smoky flavor that guests love.
  5. Fuel: Nothing kills a party faster than running out of gas. Make sure you have a full tank or know where to get a propane refill james island before the guests arrive. We offer several options for propane tank refills and propane exchange james island to keep your grills firing all day.

Setting Up Drinks and Dessert Stations

To keep the main food line moving, set up separate stations for drinks and desserts.

  • Drink Station: Use galvanized buckets filled with 8 ounces of ice per person. Offer a mix of soda, water, and perhaps a signature fruit-infused water in large mason jars.
  • Condiment Organizers: Keep your ketchup, mustard, and bbq sauce recipe ideas in one central location.
  • Dessert Station: Simple items like brownies, cookies, or a DIY ice cream bar are always hits. Use tiered trays to save space and make the display look more appetizing.

Planning Quantities and Entertainment

One of the biggest stressors for any host is running out of food or having bored guests. A little math and some classic games can solve both problems.

Calculating Food and Barbecue Party Supplies Per Guest

When shopping for your cookout, use these general guidelines to ensure everyone leaves full:

Item Recommended Quantity Per Guest
Burger Patties 1/2 lb (or two 1/4 lb patties)
Hot Dogs 1.5 – 2 per person
Side Dishes 1/4 – 1/2 cup each (potato salad, beans, etc.)
Drinks 2 cans of soda/water per person
Ice 8 oz per person (more if it’s over 90 degrees!)
Paper Plates 1.5 – 2 per person
Napkins 2 – 3 per person

Remember to account for dietary restrictions. Having a few veggie burgers or gluten-free buns on hand ensures all your neighbors feel welcome.

Games and Activities for All Ages

A BBQ is a social event, and games are the perfect icebreaker. Classics like cornhole and giant Jenga are staples in Charleston backyards because they are easy to set up and fun for all ages. For larger reunions, consider “old school” activities like sack races or flying discs.

If your party extends into the evening, setting up a backyard movie with a simple projector and a white sheet can be a magical way to end the night. And don’t forget the music! A curated summer playlist—think classic rock, beach music, or upbeat country—sets the tone for the entire event.

Frequently Asked Questions about BBQ Planning

How many plates and napkins should I buy per guest?

We recommend planning for at least two plates per guest (one for the main meal and one for snacks or dessert). For napkins, plan for three per person. BBQ food is famously messy, and guests will appreciate having extras nearby. If you are serving “finger foods” like wings or ribs, you might even want to increase that number.

What are the best outdoor-safe decorations for summer weather?

Look for materials like plastic, vinyl, and treated cardstock. Plastic pennant banners and vinyl tablecloths are waterproof and won’t wilt in the humidity. For greenery, UV-protected artificial plants are the best way to ensure your décor stays looking fresh even in the intense South Carolina sun. Avoid thin paper streamers, as they can bleed color if they get damp or humid.

How do I keep food at the right temperature during an outdoor party?

For cold sides like potato salad or coleslaw, place the serving bowl inside a larger bowl filled with ice. For hot foods, use aluminum trays with lids or chafing dishes with fuel cells. If you’re using a blackstone tabletop griddle or a black stone grill griddle, you can often keep meats warm on the low-heat side of the surface. Always follow the “two-hour rule”: don’t leave perishable food out for more than two hours (or one hour if it’s over 90 degrees).

This Ace Hardware store is not really close to my house but I came here after having a poor experience at the Johns Island Ace. I was greeted by friendly employees upon entry and throughout my experience, asked if I needed help, the store atmosphere was cheerful and in organized condition, and they had absolutely no problem exchanging an item purchased at another Ace Hardware for a few other items from their store. I even spent extra money in store. I will drive the extra mileage to come to this store moving forward.

Visited Sunday afternoon 3/23/25. Always a pleasure to browse and shop at this Ace store. A man, Steve, around 4-430 totally helped me in the name of Customer Service. He cut chain for me that isn't sold separately for a hanging basket. Bigger, he followed me to checkout with a bag of soil weighing a ton. Steve insisted I bring my SUV parked in far-away Publix Land so he could lift it out of cart into my SUV. Wouldn't budge on who was moving the soil into the SUV! Thank you again, Steve! Anita

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”

After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
