Why BBQ Burner Covers Are Essential for Your Outdoor Grill

BBQ burner covers are protective accessories designed to shield your grill and its components from weather, debris, UV rays, and pests when not in use.

Quick answer — what you need to know:

Cover Type Best For Key Benefit
Full grill cover All grill types All-weather protection
Side burner cover Built-in or freestanding side burners Precision fit, debris blocking
Insulated grill blanket Cold-climate grilling Thermal buffering
Fire pit burner cover Outdoor fire pits Element protection + usable surface
Power burner cover Built-in power burners UV and scratch resistance

Your grill is a real investment. Here in the Lowcountry, the combination of salt air, humidity, intense sun, and afternoon rainstorms creates one of the harshest environments for outdoor cooking equipment anywhere in the country. Without the right protection, burners corrode, finishes fade, and parts fail far sooner than they should.

A good cover doesn’t just keep things clean — it extends the life of your entire outdoor cooking setup.

The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace has deep experience helping Charleston-area homeowners find the right bbq burner covers for every grill type, setup, and budget. We’ll walk you through everything you need to make the right call.

Understanding BBQ Burner Covers and Their Essential Role

When we talk about bbq burner covers, there are actually two things people often mean. First, there are the internal heat plates (sometimes called flame tamers or burner shields) that sit inside the grill. Second, there are the external protective fabric or vinyl covers that go over the appliance when it’s not in use. Both are vital for the longevity of your equipment.

Internal components like heat plates and burner shields protect the actual gas burners from grease and drippings, which prevents flare-ups and keeps the metal from corroding. However, external bbq burner covers are what keep the South Carolina humidity and salt air from eating away at your grill’s exterior.

Rust mitigation is a major part of BBQ Grill Maintenance. In places like James Island or Folly Beach, the air is thick with moisture and salt. If you leave your burners exposed, the delicate ignition systems and burner ports can clog with dust or begin to oxidize. A heavy-duty cover acts as a primary shield, ensuring that when you’re ready to flip some burgers, your grill starts on the first click.

Why bbq burner covers are a safety essential

Safety isn’t just about how you cook; it’s about how you store your gear. We often see families in Charleston with curious kids and pets. A snug-fitting cover acts as a visual and physical deterrent. It makes it much harder for children to access control knobs or igniters, acting as a “tamper-prevention” layer.

Furthermore, critters love a warm, greasy grill. Without bbq burner covers, spiders can spin webs inside the burner tubes (leading to dangerous “flashback” fires), and rodents might decide your grill is the perfect winter home. A cover with tension edges or secure straps prevents these pests from gaining easy access.

Main Function Distributes heat & protects burners Weather and debris protection
Safety Role Prevents flare-ups Prevents tampering & pest entry
Climate Defense High-heat resistance UV and moisture resistance

Protecting against environmental factors

In Charleston, we deal with “The Big Three”: UV rays, salt air, and humidity.

  1. UV Protection: Intense South Carolina sun can make plastic knobs brittle and cause paint to flake. Quality covers feature UV inhibitors woven into the fabric to resist fading and material breakdown.
  2. Salt Air: If you live near the coast, salt is your grill’s worst enemy. It accelerates rust at an alarming rate.
  3. Humidity: Moisture trapped under a cheap, non-breathable cover can actually cause more harm than good.

Finding quality grill covers for all sizes means looking for materials that are waterproof but also breathable to prevent condensation buildup.

Choosing the Right bbq burner covers for Your Setup

Not all covers are created equal. If you have a custom outdoor kitchen on James Island, a generic “one-size-fits-all” bag from a big-box store probably won’t cut it. You need something that matches the specific dimensions of your equipment.

For high-end setups, you might be looking at specialized power burner specifications to ensure your built-in components are protected. These heavy-duty burners require specialized covers that can handle their unique shapes. We always recommend checking out our guide on BBQ Grill Covers to see which materials hold up best in our local climate.

Specialized bbq burner covers for side burners and power burners

Side burners and power burners often have unique shapes that standard grill covers don’t account for. If you have a built-in power burner, you’ll want a dedicated model-specific protector.

These specialized covers often feature:

  • Precision-fitted designs: They won’t blow away in a Folly Beach windstorm.
  • Dual-ring protection: Covers that account for the different heights of burner rings.
  • Polyester-lined interiors: To prevent scratching the high-polish stainless steel of your premium appliances.

Covers for diverse grill types

Whether you’re a charcoal purist or a pellet grill enthusiast, your cover needs to match your fuel type.

  • Gas Grills: Often require covers with specific cutouts for side shelves and propane tank access.
  • Charcoal Smokers: Usually taller and rounder, requiring a “dome” fit.
  • Pellet Grills: Since these have electronic components and wood pellets that must stay dry, a 100% waterproof cover is non-negotiable.
  • Griddles: These have large, flat surfaces that are prone to rust if even a little moisture gets in.

Material Science: What Makes a Durable Grill Protector?

What are these things actually made of? In 2025, the standard for a quality bbq burner covers is heavy-duty polyester with a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) backing.

  • Polyester: Provides the strength and flexibility.
  • PVC Backing: Provides the waterproofing.
  • 304 Stainless Steel: Used for hard covers (like those for fire pits) because it is incredibly resistant to rust.

Brands like those found in the Charbroil Cover Collections often use multi-layer technology to balance weight and durability. You want a cover that is heavy enough to stay put but light enough that you don’t break a sweat taking it off.

Benefits of insulated grill blankets

If you’re the type of griller who doesn’t let a “cold” (by Charleston standards) January day stop you, an insulated blanket is a game-changer. These are different from standard bbq burner covers.

While a standard cover is for storage, an insulated blanket is often used during the cook (especially on pellet grills). They provide a thermal buffer, which:

  • Improves fuel efficiency: Your grill doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain temperature.
  • Protects against wind: Keeps the internal heat consistent.
  • Enables winter grilling: Perfect for Wood Pellet Barbeque Grills that might struggle in a chilly breeze.

Key features for 2025 longevity

When you’re shopping at Lowcountry Ace, look for these specific features that indicate a cover will last more than one season:

  1. Breathable Fabrics: Look for vents that allow moisture to escape so you don’t find mold on your grates.
  2. Tension Edges & Secure Straps: These keep the cover from becoming a kite during a summer thunderstorm.
  3. Reinforced Seams: Double-stitching prevents the cover from tearing at the corners of your grill.
  4. UV Inhibitors: Essential for preventing the “graying” and brittleness caused by the sun.

How to Measure and Maintain Your BBQ Burner Covers

The biggest mistake we see is people guessing their grill size. A cover that is too big will pool water and blow away; a cover that is too small will tear and leave parts of your grill exposed to the salt air.

To ensure you have the right Outdoor Cooking Equipment, you need to get out the measuring tape.

Measuring for a perfect fit

Follow these steps for a perfect match:

Search Lowcountry Ace

  1. Width: Measure from the outer edge of one side shelf to the outer edge of the other.
  2. Depth: Measure from the front of the control knobs to the very back of the grill (including the hood handle).
  3. Height: Measure from the ground to the top of the closed hood. Note: Most covers are designed to sit an inch or two off the ground to allow for airflow.
  4. Special Features: Note if you have a smoke stack or a side burner that sticks out further than the shelves.

Cleaning and off-season storage

Even your bbq burner covers need a little TLC. If you let bird droppings or tree sap sit on the cover, they can eat through the protective coating.

  • Cleaning: Use mild dish soap and warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals or putting the cover in a washing machine, which can strip the PVC backing.
  • Drying: Always air dry the cover completely before folding it up.
  • Storage: If you’re heading out of town or won’t be grilling for a few weeks, store the cover indoors in a dry spot to prevent mold.

Maintenance Checklist:

  • [ ] Wipe down every 2 weeks to remove salt and dust.
  • [ ] Check straps and buckles for wear.
  • [ ] Look for “pinholes” where water might be leaking through.
  • [ ] Ensure vents are clear of spider webs or debris.

Frequently Asked Questions about BBQ Burner Covers

Do I need a cover if my grill is under a porch?

Yes! While a porch protects against direct rain, it doesn’t stop humidity, salt air, or dust. In fact, pollen and dust can settle on a greasy grill and create a grimy film that is very hard to clean. A cover also keeps pests like wasps from building nests under your side burners. You can find specialized outdoor kitchen grill covers designed for covered patios that prioritize dust protection and breathability.

Can I use a standard grill cover for a side burner?

We don’t recommend it. Side burners have unique, smaller shapes. A large grill cover will have too much excess fabric, which catches the wind and can actually pull the cover off or cause it to shred against the corners of the burner. A precision-fitted side burner cover is much more effective.

How often should I replace my burner cover?

In Charleston, a high-quality cover usually lasts 2 to 4 years. If you notice the material becoming “crunchy” or brittle, or if you see visible cracks in the PVC lining, it’s time for a replacement. 2025 durability standards have improved, but the South Carolina sun is still a formidable opponent!

Conclusion

Investing in high-quality bbq burner covers is the simplest way to protect your outdoor kitchen investment. Whether you are dealing with the salt spray of Folly Beach or the humidity of James Island, the right cover keeps your burners clean, your ignition systems dry, and your grill looking like new for years to come.

This Ace Hardware store is not really close to my house but I came here after having a poor experience at the Johns Island Ace. I was greeted by friendly employees upon entry and throughout my experience, asked if I needed help, the store atmosphere was cheerful and in organized condition, and they had absolutely no problem exchanging an item purchased at another Ace Hardware for a few other items from their store. I even spent extra money in store. I will drive the extra mileage to come to this store moving forward.

Visited Sunday afternoon 3/23/25. Always a pleasure to browse and shop at this Ace store. A man, Steve, around 4-430 totally helped me in the name of Customer Service. He cut chain for me that isn't sold separately for a hanging basket. Bigger, he followed me to checkout with a bag of soil weighing a ton. Steve insisted I bring my SUV parked in far-away Publix Land so he could lift it out of cart into my SUV. Wouldn't budge on who was moving the soil into the SUV! Thank you again, Steve! Anita

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”

After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
