Why Your 20 Inch Lawn Mower Blade Makes or Breaks Your Lawn

A 20 inch lawn mower blade is one of the most important parts of your mower — and one of the most overlooked. When it’s sharp, your grass gets a clean cut that stays healthy and green. When it’s dull, it tears the grass instead of cutting it, leaving ragged edges that turn brown and invite disease.

Here’s a quick look at the most popular 20-inch replacement blades available in 2025:

Blade Model Brand Best For Price Range
AB2000 EGO EGO POWER+ 20″ mowers ~$30+
29172 Greenworks Greenworks corded mowers ~$25
Part# 602007 Pulsar PTG1220 series mowers ~$30
490-100-0090 Arnold Universal walk-behind mowers ~$27
331730S MaxPower Walk-behind mulching ~$17

Blades dull faster than most people expect. Hitting a rock, a root, or even hard soil once can knock an edge out of alignment. And in the South Carolina heat, a torn lawn doesn’t just look bad — it struggles to recover.

The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace has hands-on experience helping local homeowners find the right 20 inch lawn mower blade for everything from coastal yard conditions to specific mower brands. We’ve put together this guide to make the comparison easy, so you can get back to a clean-cutting mower fast.

Top-Rated 20 Inch Lawn Mower Blade Options for 2025

Choosing a replacement isn’t just about the length; it’s about matching the specific needs of your machine and your grass. In 2025, we are seeing a major shift toward hardened steel blades that retain their edge longer, especially for the high-torque cordless mowers popular in the James Island and Folly Beach areas.

If you are looking for the best performance, here are the heavy hitters currently leading the market:

  • EGO AB2000: Specifically designed for the EGO POWER+ cordless lawn mower, this blade is factory-sharpened to ensure the clean cut that EGO users expect. It is a multipurpose blade that handles bagging, mulching, and side discharge with ease.
  • Greenworks 29172: If you have a corded Greenworks mower, this steel blade is the standard. Interestingly, while the deck is 20 inches, the blade itself measures approximately 19 inches to allow for proper clearance.
  • Pulsar 602007: Designed for the PTG1220 series, this blade is a direct OEM replacement. At roughly $29.97, it provides a reliable fit for Pulsar gas-powered push mowers.
  • Arnold Universal (490-100-0090): For those with older mowers or brands that are harder to find, this 3-in-1 universal blade is a lifesaver. It fits many 20-inch walk-behind decks and comes with hardware to adapt to different spindle shapes.

When you invest in a quality blade, you’re not just buying metal; you’re buying cutting efficiency. Hardened steel stays sharper longer, which means less time spent on ace mowers maintenance and more time enjoying your weekend.

Understanding Different 20 Inch Lawn Mower Blade Types

Not all blades are created equal. Depending on how you manage your grass clippings, you’ll want to choose a specific profile:

  1. Mulching Blades: These often have a “curved” or high-surface-area design. They circulate the grass clippings under the deck, cutting them multiple times until they are tiny enough to fall back into the soil as natural fertilizer. The MaxPower 331730S is a fantastic example of a dedicated mulching blade.
  2. High-Lift Blades: If you prefer bagging your grass, high-lift blades are your best friend. They feature deeper “wings” on the ends that create a powerful vacuum, sucking the clippings up and shooting them into the bag. The Oregon 97-109 is known for this aggressive air-lift design.
  3. Standard/3-in-1 Blades: These are the “jacks of all trades.” They provide a balance of lift for bagging and a decent edge for mulching. Most new mowers come with these installed.

How to Choose the Right 20 Inch Lawn Mower Blade for Your Deck

The most common mistake we see at Lowcountry Ace is a customer buying a blade based on length alone. While it might be a 20 inch lawn mower blade, the “center hole” is what determines if it will actually bolt onto your mower.

  • Center Hole Shapes: Some mowers use a simple round hole (like 5/8″ or 1″), while others use a “star” pattern (5-point or 7-point), a “bow-tie” shape, or even a “Y” shape.
  • Spindle Compatibility: If your mower has a star-shaped spindle, a round-hole blade will not fit securely and could be incredibly dangerous if forced.
  • Deck Clearance: Ensure the blade isn’t too long. For example, some “20-inch” mowers actually require a 19-3/8″ or 19-1/2″ blade to prevent the tips from hitting the side of the deck.

For those looking for high-performance aftermarket options, technical specs for 20-3/8″ blades can provide the exact measurements needed to ensure a perfect fit for brands like Murray or Craftsman. If you’re upgrading an electric setup, checking more info about EGO cordless mowers ensures you get a blade that won’t drain your battery prematurely.

Maintenance and Installation Tips for Peak Performance

Once you’ve found the perfect 20 inch lawn mower blade, you need to install it correctly. Safety is the absolute priority here.

Essential Safety Gear:

  • Heavy-duty work gloves (to protect against sharp edges)
  • Eye protection
  • A block of wood (to wedge the blade and prevent it from turning)
  • A socket wrench or torque wrench

Installation Steps:

  1. Disconnect the Power: For gas mowers, pull the spark plug wire. For cordless mowers, remove the battery. This prevents accidental startups.
  2. Tilt the Mower: Always tilt a gas mower with the air filter side up to prevent oil from leaking into the carburetor.
  3. Secure the Old Blade: Use a block of wood to jam the blade against the deck.
  4. Loosen the Bolt: Turn the bolt counter-clockwise (in most cases) to remove the old blade.
  5. Clean the Area: Scrape away dried grass and mud from the spindle area.
  6. Install the New Blade: Ensure the “grass side” (usually marked) is facing down.
  7. Torque it Down: Check your manual for the specific torque settings. A blade that is too loose can vibrate, while one that is too tight can damage the spindle.

Don’t forget that even a new blade needs love. Regular blade sharpening is essential every 20-25 hours of use. If you notice your mower shaking after a DIY sharpening session, you may need more info about balancing blades to prevent bearing damage.

Frequently Asked Questions about 20-Inch Blades

How do I know if my 20-inch blade needs replacing?

You don’t always need a new blade; sometimes a good sharpening will do. However, you should replace your 20 inch lawn mower blade if you see:

  • Visible Nicks or Dents: Hitting rocks can take chunks out of the metal that cannot be sharpened out.
  • Thinning Metal: If the “wings” or the trailing edge of the blade look paper-thin, the blade is structurally compromised.
  • Excessive Vibration: This often indicates a bent blade, which is a major safety hazard.
  • Jagged Grass: If your lawn looks “white” or “shredded” on top after a mow, the blade is no longer cutting cleanly.

Can I use a universal 20-inch blade on any mower?

Universal blades, like the Arnold brand, are designed to fit a wide range of mowers. They usually come with a kit of “washers” or “adapters” to match different center hole sizes. While they are great for older mowers, we generally recommend using OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) blades for high-end cordless mowers like EGO to maintain your manufacturer warranty and optimize battery life.

What is the difference between a 19-inch and 20-inch blade?

This is a point of confusion for many. Most “20-inch mowers” actually use a blade that is slightly shorter (often 19 inches or 19-1/2 inches) to allow for about a half-inch of clearance on either side of the deck. If you try to force a true 20-inch blade into a tight 20-inch deck, it may strike the casing. Always check the technical specs for 20-1/2″ blades or your specific model number before buying.

Conclusion

A healthy lawn starts from the ground up, and your 20 inch lawn mower blade is the tool that makes it happen. Whether you are looking for the superior mulching of a MaxPower blade or the factory precision of an EGO replacement, choosing the right part will save you time, fuel, and frustration.

This Ace Hardware store is not really close to my house but I came here after having a poor experience at the Johns Island Ace. I was greeted by friendly employees upon entry and throughout my experience, asked if I needed help, the store atmosphere was cheerful and in organized condition, and they had absolutely no problem exchanging an item purchased at another Ace Hardware for a few other items from their store. I even spent extra money in store. I will drive the extra mileage to come to this store moving forward.

Visited Sunday afternoon 3/23/25. Always a pleasure to browse and shop at this Ace store. A man, Steve, around 4-430 totally helped me in the name of Customer Service. He cut chain for me that isn't sold separately for a hanging basket. Bigger, he followed me to checkout with a bag of soil weighing a ton. Steve insisted I bring my SUV parked in far-away Publix Land so he could lift it out of cart into my SUV. Wouldn't budge on who was moving the soil into the SUV! Thank you again, Steve! Anita

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”

After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
