Why Woods Mower Blades Matter for Your Lawn

Woods mower blades are the key to a clean, professional-looking lawn. Sharp, properly fitted blades cut grass cleanly, while dull or incorrect blades tear it, leading to brown tips, disease, and a ragged appearance. To get the best results from your Woods rotary cutter or finish mower, you need the right blade.

Quick Blade Selection Guide:

  • OEM Woods Blades: Heat-treated alloy steel, guaranteed fit, typically $40-$125
  • Blade Types: Standard (general use), high-lift (bagging), mulching (fine clippings), heavy-duty (brush cutting)
  • Key Specs to Match: Blade length (14″-30″), center hole size (usually 1.5″), rotation direction (CW or CCW)
  • Compatible Models: RC3.5, RC4, RC42.20, RC48.20, and various finish mowers

Woods Equipment is known for durability and precision, but even the best mower is only as good as its blades. Whether you’re maintaining a residential lawn or clearing thick brush, the correct blade is crucial for a job well done.

The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace has extensive experience with Woods mower blades. We’re here to guide you through selection and maintenance for optimal lawn care results.

Understanding the Different Types of Woods Mower Blades

Not all mower blades are created equal. To get the best results from your equipment, it’s important to understand what makes a quality Woods mower blade. Genuine Woods blades, for example, are held to a higher standard.

Woods blades are typically crafted from heat-treated alloy steel, giving them a significant edge in durability and cutting precision. This process hardens the steel, making it more resistant to wear so it stays sharper longer. A quality blade delivers cleaner cuts, runs more efficiently, and requires less frequent replacement.

The Advantage of Genuine Woods OEM Blades

We recommend genuine Woods OEM blades because they are engineered for peak performance with Woods equipment. They offer several key benefits:

Search Lowcountry Ace

  • Precision and Durability: Each blade is made to exact specifications for a clean cut and is rigorously tested to withstand real-world conditions. For example, the WOODS OEM 1037893KT blade set is crafted from heat-treated alloy steel to handle demanding use on models like the RC3.5, RC4, RC42.20, and RC48.20 Rotary Cutters.
  • Perfect Fit and Efficiency: OEM blades match your mower’s mounting system exactly, eliminating wobble and vibration. This precision fit ensures smoother operation and allows your mower to operate at peak efficiency without straining the engine.
  • Warranty Protection: Using genuine OEM parts helps maintain your equipment’s warranty, as many manufacturers require them.

The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace can help you identify the right OEM blade for your Woods mower model.

Common Blade Types and Their Uses

Woods mower blades come in several types, each optimized for specific tasks.

  • Standard blades (or 2-in-1 blades) are workhorses for general cutting and side discharge. They create moderate airflow to lift grass for a clean cut and are ideal for routine maintenance.
  • High-lift blades (or 3-in-1 blades) have aggressive angles that create a stronger vacuum. This provides a cleaner cut and is highly effective for bagging clippings, especially in thick or tall grass.
  • Mulching blades (or 3-in-1 blades) feature multiple cutting surfaces to chop clippings into fine pieces that fall back into the lawn, acting as a natural fertilizer. They work best on dry grass when cutting no more than one-third of the grass height.

Heavy-Duty Blades for Rotary Cutters

For thick brush, overgrown fields, or rough terrain, you need heavy-duty blades designed for Woods rotary cutters. These blades are thicker and heavier than finish mower blades, giving them the inertia to power through small saplings and dense undergrowth without bending or bogging down. They are built for durability and can take impacts that would destroy a standard blade. These rugged blades are compatible with models like the RC3.5, RC4, and RC42.20 rotary cutters. The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace can help you determine if heavy-duty blades are right for your needs.

How to Choose the Perfect Blade for Your Mower

Finding the right Woods mower blade requires attention to detail. The correct blade ensures clean cuts and protects your equipment.

Matching Blades to Your Mower Model and Deck Size

Consult your owner’s manual for the exact part numbers. If you can’t find the manual, check for a decal on your mower deck with the model information. Deck size is critical; a blade for a 48″ deck won’t work on a 60″ deck. Common Woods deck sizes include 40″, 42″, 44″, 48″, 52″, 60″, 61″, and 72″.

Cross-referencing the OEM number ensures you get the right part. For example, the WOODS OEM 1037893KT blade is specifically listed for models like the RC42.20 Rotary Cutter. The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace can look up your model number and find the correct blade in minutes.

Key Dimensions: Measuring for the Right Fit

If you need to measure an old blade, be precise.

Image demonstrating how to measure a mower blade's length from tip to tip, the width of the blade, and the diameter and shape of the center mounting hole - woods mower blades

  • Blade Length: Measure diagonally from tip to tip. Woods blades range from 14″ to 30″.
  • Blade Width and Thickness: Width is the widest part of the cutting surface. Thickness indicates robustness, with heavy-duty blades being significantly thicker (up to 0.5″) than standard blades.
  • Center Hole: Match both the diameter (1.5″ is common for Woods) and the shape (e.g., round, star) to your mower’s spindle to prevent vibration.
  • Direction of Rotation: Blades are designed for either clockwise (CW) or counter-clockwise (CCW) rotation. Installing one backward will tear grass. The WOODS OEM 1037893KT, for instance, is a CCW blade.

If you’re unsure, bring your old blade to Lowcountry Ace, and we’ll measure it for you.

Considering Your Terrain and Grass Type

The Lowcountry’s unique conditions, from flat Charleston lawns to the sandy soil of James Island, influence blade choice.

Search Lowcountry Ace

  • Terrain: For level ground, standard or high-lift blades work well. For rough terrain with bumps or roots, choose a durable blade that resists bending. Heavy-duty rotary cutter blades are essential for clearing thick brush and saplings.
  • Grass Type and Mowing Style: Fine grasses cut cleanly with sharp standard blades. For mulching, use dedicated mulching blades on dry grass. For bagging, high-lift blades provide the necessary vacuum to collect clippings efficiently. For side discharge, standard blades are usually sufficient.

Essential Maintenance for Peak Performance

Proper care of your Woods mower blades is crucial for a clean cut and long mower life. A little upkeep saves money and keeps your equipment running smoothly.

Always prioritize safety: wear heavy-duty gloves when handling blades and disconnect the spark plug before any maintenance. Inspect blades before each use for obvious damage, and perform a closer check every 10-12 hours of mowing. Cleaning off caked-on grass after each use prevents imbalance and rust.

When to Sharpen vs. When to Replace Your Woods Mower Blades

How do you know if a blade needs sharpening or replacement? Look for these signs:

  • Dull Blade Indicators: Your lawn looks uneven or ragged, with torn grass tips that turn brown. The mower may also vibrate more than usual.
  • When to Replace: Replace a blade immediately if you see any cracks, no matter how small. Also, replace blades that are bent or have become noticeably thin from repeated sharpening.

For most homeowners in the Charleston area, we recommend replacing blades annually. If you maintain larger properties, you may need to replace them more often.

Blade Sharpening and Balancing

Correctly sharpening your Woods mower blades restores the factory cutting angle (typically 30-45 degrees). You can use a hand file, bench grinder, or angle grinder. Work slowly, maintain the original angle, and avoid overheating the metal, which can weaken the steel.

After sharpening, balancing is essential. An unbalanced blade causes vibration that can damage your mower’s engine and bearings. Use a simple blade balancer; if one side dips, it’s too heavy. Carefully file a small amount of material from the heavier side until the blade sits level.

If you prefer not to do it yourself, the helpful team at Lowcountry Ace offers professional lawnmower blade sharpening services. More info about our hardware store services.

Proper Cleaning and Off-Season Storage

After each mowing, clean grass and debris from the blades and deck with a stiff brush or scraper. To prevent rust, apply a light coat of oil or a rust preventative spray.

Search Lowcountry Ace

For off-season storage, Woods Equipment recommends removing the mower drive belt to prevent hard spots. Lubricate all pivot points and grease the blade spindle bearings. A thorough cleaning before storage will ensure your equipment is in great condition for the next season. Following these practices will keep your Woods mower blades sharp and efficient.

Where to Purchase Genuine Parts

When you need to replace your Woods mower blades, sourcing genuine parts ensures a perfect fit and optimal performance. You can verify authenticity by checking for detailed specifications like dimensions, center hole size, and part numbers (e.g., WOODS OEM 1037893KT). Prices for Woods mower blades can range from around $37.99 to $124.40 for specialized kits. Genuine OEM blades provide excellent long-term value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some common questions we hear about Woods mower blades at our store.

How do I find the right blade if I don’t have the part number?

First, check your mower deck for a sticker with the model number and deck size. With that information, you can often find the part number online or by consulting an expert. Alternatively, you can carefully measure your old blade’s length (tip-to-tip), width, and the center hole’s diameter and shape. The easiest way is to bring your old blade and mower model information to the helpful team at Lowcountry Ace, and we’ll identify the correct replacement for you.

OEM Woods blades, like the WOODS OEM 1037893KT, are made from heat-treated alloy steel and are engineered to guarantee a perfect fit, optimal performance, and warranty compliance. Using genuine parts ensures your mower runs efficiently without unnecessary strain from poorly fitting components. For the challenging conditions in the Charleston area, we recommend genuine Woods mower blades for their consistent durability and performance.

How often should I inspect my mower blades?

Regular inspection is key for safety and performance. Follow this simple schedule:

  • Before Each Use: A quick visual check for major damage like cracks or bends.
  • Every 10-12 Hours of Use: Check for dullness. If the grass is cut unevenly or appears torn, the blades need sharpening.
  • If You Hit an Object: Stop and inspect the blades immediately for damage.

A thorough inspection should be part of your monthly maintenance routine. If you’re ever unsure, bring the blade to our shop, and we’ll give you an honest assessment.

This Ace Hardware store is not really close to my house but I came here after having a poor experience at the Johns Island Ace. I was greeted by friendly employees upon entry and throughout my experience, asked if I needed help, the store atmosphere was cheerful and in organized condition, and they had absolutely no problem exchanging an item purchased at another Ace Hardware for a few other items from their store. I even spent extra money in store. I will drive the extra mileage to come to this store moving forward.

Visited Sunday afternoon 3/23/25. Always a pleasure to browse and shop at this Ace store. A man, Steve, around 4-430 totally helped me in the name of Customer Service. He cut chain for me that isn't sold separately for a hanging basket. Bigger, he followed me to checkout with a bag of soil weighing a ton. Steve insisted I bring my SUV parked in far-away Publix Land so he could lift it out of cart into my SUV. Wouldn't budge on who was moving the soil into the SUV! Thank you again, Steve! Anita

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”

After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
