Why a BJ’s Propane Gas Refill Is One of the Best Deals for Grillers in 2025

A BJ’s propane gas refill is one of the most affordable ways to keep your grill running — available to both members and non-members at prices well below what most retailers charge.

Here’s a quick summary of what you need to know:

Detail Info
Tank sizes filled 20 lb and 30 lb only
Member refill price (20 lb) ~$8.99
Non-member refill price (20 lb) ~$9.99
Typical competitor price $14–$20
New 20 lb tank at BJ’s $29.99
Tank holds ~4.6–4.7 gallons
Membership required? No

Most people pay around $20 for a 20 lb refill elsewhere. At BJ’s, even non-members can pay under $10 at many locations. That’s a real saving — especially if you grill often.

Prices do vary by location and season, so your local club may differ slightly from the numbers above.

The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace has put together this guide to walk you through everything — from pricing and membership perks to the step-by-step refill process and what to do if your tank gets rejected.

Simple bjs propane gas refill glossary:

Understanding the BJ’s Propane Gas Refill Service

When we talk about getting a bjs propane gas refill, we aren’t just talking about a simple swap. Unlike many big-box stores that only offer tank exchanges, BJ’s provides a dedicated refill service. This means you keep your own tank, and you only pay for the gas put into it. It’s a point of pride for many grillers who have invested in high-quality equipment.

At BJ’s, the focus is primarily on the standard consumer sizes. They specifically fill 20 lb and 30 lb tanks. While they sell a variety of outdoor equipment, their refill stations are strictly calibrated for these two sizes. If you are looking for a new vessel, you will often find the Worthington Pro Grade series on their shelves. These are refillable steel tanks known for their durability and “Pro Grade” finish, which helps resist the salty air we often experience here in Charleston and James Island.

However, not every tank is eligible for a refill. Safety is the top priority for the team members operating the pumps. Before they hook up the hose, they will perform a visual inspection. They are looking for:

  • 12-Year Expiry: Propane tanks have a “born-on” date stamped on the collar. In the U.S., these tanks are generally good for 12 years from the date of manufacture before they require recertification.
  • Rust and Pitting: While a little surface rust is common, deep pitting that compromises the integrity of the steel is a deal-breaker.
  • Dents and Damage: Any structural deformity to the tank or the protective collar can lead to a rejected refill.
  • Valve Condition: The propane-tank-service-valve must be in good working order and compatible with modern Overfill Prevention Device (OPD) standards.

If your tank is rejected, don’t worry—it happens to the best of us! You can find more info about propane refills and how to handle tank maintenance to ensure you’re always ready for the next BBQ.

Selecting the Right Tank for Your Grill

Choosing the right tank depends largely on what you’re cooking on. For those who love portability, the Coleman RoadTrip 285 Portable Stand-Up Propane Grill is a popular choice for beach days at Folly Beach. While these portable units often use small 1 lb canisters, many users prefer to use a Blackstone 5471 Propane Adapter Hose & Regulator to connect to a full-sized 20 lb tank for longer sessions.

A standard 20 lb tank provides a significant BTU output, meaning it can handle the high heat required for searing steaks or running a large griddle. By refilling a 20 lb tank instead of using disposables, you significantly lower your fuel consumption costs over the course of a summer.

Pricing and Membership Benefits for 2025

One of the biggest questions we get is: “Is it actually cheaper than an exchange?” The answer is a resounding yes. When you use a bjs propane gas refill service, you are typically paying about half the price of a standard exchange kiosk.

In 2025, the pricing remains incredibly competitive. While prices can fluctuate based on the market and the season (typically dropping in the early fall when demand is lower), the general trend is:

Service Type Estimated Cost (2025)
BJ’s Member Refill (20 lb) $8.99
BJ’s Non-Member Refill (20 lb) $9.99
Standard Exchange Kiosk $19.99 – $24.99
BJ’s New 20 lb Tank (Full) $29.99

By refilling, you are paying for the actual gallons pumped. A 20 lb tank holds roughly 4.6 to 4.7 gallons of propane. If you use a CALPOSE Propane Tank Gauge, you can see exactly how much you have left and avoid paying for a “full” exchange when your tank still has a gallon or two of gas remaining.

Membership Perks for a BJ’s Propane Gas Refill

While you don’t need a membership to get a refill, being a member certainly has its perks. Members save about $1.00 to $2.00 per refill compared to guests. Furthermore, BJ’s often integrates propane into their Fuel Savers Program.

If you have a BJ’s One Mastercard, you might find even more ways to stack savings. Occasionally, digital coupons are available through the BJ’s app that can be applied to propane purchases or related grilling accessories. Even without the membership, the $9.99 non-member price is still roughly $10 cheaper than the average exchange price at a grocery store or gas station.

If you’ve never done a bjs propane gas refill before, the layout can be a little confusing. Unlike the gas pumps for your car, the propane station is usually tucked away in a specific service area.

In most locations, the propane refill station is located near the Tire Center. Here is the general layout of the land:

  1. Check Availability: Not every single BJ’s location has a propane pump. It is always a good idea to check the BJ’s website or app to confirm your local club offers the service.
  2. Payment Location: You generally do not pay at the pump. You will need to go inside—often to the Tire Center desk or the main checkout—to pay for your refill first.
  3. Outdoor Staging: For safety reasons, you should never bring your propane tank inside the building. Most clubs have a designated area outside (often near the tire bay or a propane cage) where you can leave your tank while you go inside to pay.

Getting propane-tank-refills is a straightforward process once you know the “secret” of where to pay and where to park!

The Step-by-Step BJ’s Propane Gas Refill Process

Ready to fill up? Follow these steps to ensure a smooth and safe experience:

  1. Prepare Your Tank: Ensure your tank is in good condition. If you are using an adapter, like the Blackstone 5471 Propane Adapter Hose, make sure it is disconnected before you arrive.
  2. Drop Off: Locate the propane refill area. Place your empty tank in the designated staging area. Do not bring it inside.
  3. Pay Inside: Head to the Tire Center or the front desk. Tell them you need a 20 lb or 30 lb refill. They will process your payment (and ask for your membership card if you have one).
  4. Wait for an Associate: An authorized BJ’s employee will meet you at the pump. They are trained to handle the hazardous material and will connect the high-pressure hose to your tank.
  5. The 80% Rule: You might notice the pump stops before the tank “feels” like it’s at 100% capacity. This is by design. Propane tanks are only filled to 80% capacity to allow for liquid expansion as temperatures change. This is a critical safety measure.
  6. Safety Checks: The associate will perform a quick leak test using a soapy water solution to ensure the valve is seated correctly and there are no leaks after the fill.
  7. Purging (If New): If you just bought a brand-new tank, it may need to be “purged” of air before its first fill. BJ’s staff can usually handle this for you.

Frequently Asked Questions about BJ’s Propane

We know that handling pressurized gas can be a bit intimidating, so we’ve rounded up the most common questions we hear at Lowcountry Ace regarding the bjs propane gas refill experience.

How long does a 20 lb propane tank typically last?

On a medium-sized grill, a 20 lb tank (which holds about 4.6 gallons) will typically last for 18 to 20 hours of continuous grilling. If you are doing standard 20-minute burger sessions, you can expect about 50 to 60 meals out of a single tank. Of course, if you are using a high-BTU turkey fryer or a patio heater, that time will be significantly shorter. Monitoring your fuel with a gauge is the best way to ensure you don’t run out halfway through a Lowcountry boil!

Can non-members use the propane refill service?

Yes! One of the best-kept secrets about BJ’s is that non-members can use the propane refill service. While there is a small surcharge (usually bringing the price to around $9.99 compared to the $8.99 member price), it is still significantly cheaper than almost any other option in Charleston. You can simply pay at the service desk as a guest.

What should I do if my tank is rejected for refill?

If the BJ’s associate tells you they can’t fill your tank, don’t take it personally—they are following strict fire marshal codes.

  • Check the Date: If it’s over 12 years old, it needs recertification.
  • Inspect for Damage: If the foot ring is rusted through or the collar is bent, the tank is no longer safe.
  • Disposal: Most BJ’s locations do not accept old tanks for disposal, though some may charge a small fee (around $5) to take them.
  • Buy New: You can purchase a new, empty Worthington tank at BJ’s for around $29.99 and have them fill it right there.

Conclusion

Finding a reliable and affordable bjs propane gas refill is a game-changer for anyone who loves outdoor cooking. Whether you are a BJ’s member taking advantage of the $8.99 price point or a guest looking to save ten bucks over the local gas station exchange, the value is hard to beat.

This Ace Hardware store is not really close to my house but I came here after having a poor experience at the Johns Island Ace. I was greeted by friendly employees upon entry and throughout my experience, asked if I needed help, the store atmosphere was cheerful and in organized condition, and they had absolutely no problem exchanging an item purchased at another Ace Hardware for a few other items from their store. I even spent extra money in store. I will drive the extra mileage to come to this store moving forward.

Visited Sunday afternoon 3/23/25. Always a pleasure to browse and shop at this Ace store. A man, Steve, around 4-430 totally helped me in the name of Customer Service. He cut chain for me that isn't sold separately for a hanging basket. Bigger, he followed me to checkout with a bag of soil weighing a ton. Steve insisted I bring my SUV parked in far-away Publix Land so he could lift it out of cart into my SUV. Wouldn't budge on who was moving the soil into the SUV! Thank you again, Steve! Anita

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”

After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
