Pier Fishing Rules and Regulations

When enjoying Folly Beach pier fishing, it’s important to follow specific rules and regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Here’s what you need to know:

General Fishing Rules

  1. Daily Fishing Pass: Purchase your fishing pass from the gift shop and keep it visible at all times. This pass is your ticket to fish on the pier.

  2. Rod Supervision: Each angler is allowed two rods, which must be supervised at all times. Fish from designated stations or rod holders only, and ensure your gear doesn’t intrude into another’s space.

  3. Inhumane Handling: Treat all wildlife humanely. Release fish or rays you don’t plan to consume, and adhere to South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) size and catch limits.

  4. Designated Swimming Area Rules: Respect the designated swimming zones and avoid casting lines in these areas to prevent accidents.

  5. City of Folly Beach Ordinances: Intentional shark fishing is prohibited from 3rd Street West to 3rd Street East. Violations can lead to fines or even a ban from the pier.

King Mackerel Fishing Rules

For those targeting King Mackerel, specific equipment rules apply:

  • Trolley Rig Setups: Only trolley rig setups, comprising one anchor rod, one fighting rod, and one bait fishing rod, are allowed. Other setups like balloon or kite rigs are prohibited.

  • Rod Holder Limits: Each angler is permitted one rod holder per paid fishing pass.

Bottom Fishing Tackle Size Limits

Bottom fishing enthusiasts must adhere to tackle restrictions to protect the marine environment:

  • Hook Size: Use hooks no larger than size 4/0.

  • Bait Size: Whole bait should be no larger than a finger mullet, while cut bait must be smaller than 2 inches cubed.

  • Steel/Wire Leaders Prohibition: Steel or wire leaders are not allowed for bottom fishing to minimize harm to fish.

Following these rules not only helps maintain a safe and respectful fishing environment but also ensures that Folly Beach pier fishing remains a cherished activity for all.

Fishing Techniques and Tips

Shore Fishing

Shore fishing at Folly Beach is a serene and rewarding experience. One of the best spots is the Morris Island Lighthouse trail. This area is perfect for those who enjoy a quiet day with a view. The trail offers access to the beach, where you can cast your line into the water and wait for a bite. Look for areas where the water changes depth or where currents converge, as these spots often attract fish.

For those new to shore fishing, it’s important to bring the right gear. A medium-action rod and reel combo, along with a variety of baits like shrimp or cut bait, can increase your chances of a catch. Keep an eye on the tides and weather conditions, as these can greatly affect your success.

Pier Fishing

Fishing from the Folly Beach Pier is a must-do for anglers visiting the area. The pier provides three key fishing zones: the shallow parts, the middle section, and the end of the pier. Each area offers a different fishing experience.

  • Shallow Parts: Ideal for beginners, this area is great for catching smaller fish like whiting and pompano.
  • Middle Section: Here, you can target species like Redfish and Flounder. It’s a versatile spot that often sees a lot of action.
  • End of the Pier: This is where the big game is. Anglers can try their luck at landing King Mackerel or even Tarpon.

When fishing from the pier, it’s crucial to have the right setup. Use a sturdy rod and reel, and make sure to follow the pier’s fishing rules, such as using approved rigs for King Mackerel. The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace can assist you in getting the right gear.

Charter Fishing

For those seeking the ultimate fishing trip, charter fishing offers an unforgettable experience. Local guides, who are experts in these waters, can take you to the best spots for a successful catch. Most charters depart from the public dock near Folly River Bridge or Sunset Cay Marina.

Charter fishing trips can be custom to your preferences. Whether you’re interested in trolling for Mahi Mahi and Tuna or bottom fishing for Grouper, the captains will provide all the necessary equipment and share their local knowledge to improve your trip.

Charter Fishing Trip - Folly Beach pier fishing

Trolling is a popular technique used during these trips. It involves slowly dragging lures or baits behind the boat to attract fish. This method is effective for catching larger species like Wahoo and Mahi Mahi.

Bottom fishing and sight fishing are also common. Bottom fishing targets species dwelling near the seabed, while sight fishing relies on spotting fish near the surface. Both techniques require patience and skill, but the rewards can be substantial.

Whether you choose shore, pier, or charter fishing, Folly Beach offers diverse opportunities for anglers of all levels. With the right techniques and tips, you’ll be well on your way to a successful fishing trip.

This Ace Hardware store is not really close to my house but I came here after having a poor experience at the Johns Island Ace. I was greeted by friendly employees upon entry and throughout my experience, asked if I needed help, the store atmosphere was cheerful and in organized condition, and they had absolutely no problem exchanging an item purchased at another Ace Hardware for a few other items from their store. I even spent extra money in store. I will drive the extra mileage to come to this store moving forward.

Visited Sunday afternoon 3/23/25. Always a pleasure to browse and shop at this Ace store. A man, Steve, around 4-430 totally helped me in the name of Customer Service. He cut chain for me that isn't sold separately for a hanging basket. Bigger, he followed me to checkout with a bag of soil weighing a ton. Steve insisted I bring my SUV parked in far-away Publix Land so he could lift it out of cart into my SUV. Wouldn't budge on who was moving the soil into the SUV! Thank you again, Steve! Anita

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”

After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
